Responsibilities

  • Own a group of device controllers through API design, implementation, rollout, and ongoing operational health.
  • Make services robust against unreliable real-world instruments and external dependencies.
  • Bring devices onto the current framework and roll changes out across the fleet without disrupting experiments.
  • Improve shared controller infrastructure when issues apply across multiple devices.
  • Work with systems teams and quantum scientists to improve observability, health checking, and alerting.
  • Review code and mentor less experienced engineers while continuing hands-on development.

Requirements

  • Experience working with Linux-based systems and interfacing with hardware.
  • Strong systems-engineering skills, with solid Rust experience or deep proficiency in another systems language and willingness to work in Rust, including asynchronous programming.
  • Experience designing and operating networked services such as gRPC or REST, including error handling, observability, and failure modes.
  • Experience with hardware and instrument protocols and interfaces such as SCPI, Modbus, serial, and Ethernet.
  • Experience owning the production behavior and operational reliability of software.
  • Strong communication skills and an interest in helping other engineers improve.
