Base Salary

$130k - $182k/yr

Responsibilities

Own the architecture and delivery of scalable backend services for the Lister experience, including production reliability.
Deliver full-stack features across Kotlin and Ruby backend services and TypeScript and React frontend applications.
Make technical decisions for ambiguous problems while balancing delivery speed and long-term maintainability.
Partner with engineering teams across Apartment List to maintain consistent solutions for renters and property partners.
Raise the team’s technical bar through code reviews, pairing, design discussions, and mentorship.
Contribute to the Lister technical roadmap by identifying tradeoffs and opportunities for product and engineering leadership.

5+ years of professional software engineering experience in organizations focused on quality, scalability, and performance.
Strong grounding in data structures, algorithms, and distributed systems.
Demonstrated experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs.
Experience with relational databases and data modeling.
Working proficiency in at least one of Kotlin, Ruby, or TypeScript, with willingness to develop fluency in the others.
Experience working across backend services and frontend applications.
Practical experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Copilot or Claude Code, with sound judgment about their use.
Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with product managers, designers, and analysts.
Preferred qualifications include mentoring engineers, experience with search or recommendation systems, online marketplace experience, and familiarity with real-time systems for latency and performance optimization.

US total target compensation varies by location zone: $171,000–$207,000 in Zone 1, $158,000–$191,000 in Zone 2, and $145,000–$176,000 in Zone 3, plus equity; benefits and perks are not included in these figures.
