Responsibilities

  • Define and own STARK’s AI strategy across product and internal domains.
  • Lead AI stack, model, framework, MLOps infrastructure, evaluation, and tooling decisions with final technical accountability.
  • Resolve cross-team AI dependencies, shared infrastructure gaps, and redundant workstreams.
  • Drive internal AI adoption through developer productivity tooling, agent and automation infrastructure, and responsible-use frameworks.
  • Provide technical oversight of AI workstreams, including methodology, adversarial robustness, distribution shift, and operational performance.
  • Monitor academic and commercial AI advances and translate them into strategic recommendations.
  • Partner with programme and product leadership to align AI development with mission requirements.
  • Contribute to senior technical hiring, define AI engineering standards, and build STARK’s defence-AI standing.
  • Represent STARK externally at defence, robotics, and AI venues and through relevant publications or presentations.

Requirements

  • Degree in machine learning, computer vision, robotics, or a closely related field, or demonstrably equivalent depth through industry research and an open publication or open-source record.
  • Proven experience setting AI technical strategy at a senior level across multiple domains.
  • Deep technical fluency in perception and sensor fusion, autonomy and motion planning, SLAM/localisation, or multi-agent coordination.
  • Strong experience influencing technical decisions without direct line authority and working with Technical Leads.
  • Experience in defence, aerospace, or another safety-critical domain where AI failure has real-world consequences.
  • Direct UAS or ground-robotics experience is strongly preferred.
  • Fluent English; working German is advantageous in Berlin or Munich.
  • Eligibility for the required security clearance.
  • An existing European defence-AI network, staff- or principal-level AI experience, public technical work, or open-source experience is desirable.
  • Ability to operate autonomously with low overhead and without a large dedicated team.
