Responsibilities
- Fix bugs, deliver enhancements, and handle production issues in Django applications.
- Identify and resolve slow queries, inefficient code, and fragile areas while improving tests and monitoring.
- Write and tune PostgreSQL queries, migrations, and data changes safely.
- Improve code, tests, and documentation beyond assigned tickets when doing so reduces risk or future effort.
- Support multiple NLM projects and learn unfamiliar codebases quickly.
- Make frontend changes in Angular, Vue, or React when needed.
- Collaborate with federal staff and contractors, communicate risks clearly, and support recommendations with evidence.
Requirements
- At least 3 years of professional software development experience.
- Hands-on experience building and maintaining Django applications, including models, views, ORM queries, migrations, and tests.
- Ability to write PostgreSQL SQL, read query plans, and make schema changes safely.
- Knowledge of object-oriented design and common design patterns, with ability to process complex nested data structures.
- Strong debugging skills and ability to trace problems through unfamiliar codebases.
- Experience with Git branching, rebasing, and squashing in a shared repository.
- Evidence of learning beyond employment, such as personal projects, a home lab, or open-source work.
- Good judgment regarding production changes, including testing, review, and rollback planning.
- Ability to work effectively on a mixed federal and contractor team and explain tradeoffs plainly.
- Frontend experience with Angular, Vue, or React; TypeScript and JavaScript; Node, Express, and npm is preferred.
- Experience with functional and event-driven programming, search and document stores, data pipelines, ETL, varied file formats, PostgreSQL performance tuning, pytest, coverage, automated pipelines, Linux, shell scripting, Docker, AWS, NumPy, Keras, or comparable technologies is preferred.
- Familiarity with MeSH, medical terminologies, linked data, controlled vocabularies, library or biomedical data, federal work, long-lived production systems, or a public technical portfolio is preferred.
- Ability to work onsite in Bethesda, MD three to five days per week and obtain a Public Trust background investigation.
