Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate core components of a large-scale, real-time distributed decisioning system with strict latency requirements.
- Own subsystems end to end, including architecture, implementation, testing, deployment, on-call support, and long-term evolution.
- Develop a detailed understanding of a complex, highly distributed production system and deliver high-leverage improvements.
- Identify opportunities to evolve the system and its tooling.
- Collaborate with engineers and applied scientists on distributed systems and statistical or ML-driven decision-making.
- Diagnose and resolve timing-, statistics-, and concurrency-related issues in a multi-region distributed system.
- Mentor engineers and improve engineering rigor, testing discipline, and operational excellence.
- Communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders and drive alignment across engineering, product, and business teams.
Requirements
- 10+ years of experience designing, building, and operating large-scale, low-latency distributed systems, ideally including a system built substantially from the ground up.
- Demonstrated end-to-end ownership of complex systems, including design, implementation, operations, on-call, and iteration based on production feedback.
- Experience evolving and refactoring live, business-critical systems while maintaining uptime and correctness.
- Strong command of Java and knowledge of algorithms, data structures, concurrency, multi-threading, and performance optimization.
- Practical experience with distributed caching, high-throughput messaging or streaming systems, and SQL/NoSQL datastores.
- Experience operating cloud infrastructure at scale on GCP or AWS.
- Exposure to statistical, control-theory, or ML-driven techniques in production decision-making systems is preferred.
- Real-time bidding or ad-tech experience is preferred; adjacent experience in trading systems, ranking/recommendation, matchmaking, or risk/fraud systems is also valued.
- Bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Science or Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience using AI coding assistants such as Claude Code or Cursor in production work.
- Ability to work with ownership, critical thinking, collaboration, and comfort with ambiguity.
Benefits
- Health insurance, equity awards, life insurance, disability benefits, parental leave, wellness benefits, and paid time off.
- Additional benefits may include healthcare, commuter benefits, retirement options, mental health support, and financial wellness resources, depending on location and role.
