Responsibilities
- Lead the design and delivery of complex capabilities for Azure AI Search.
- Own architecture, implementation, testing, deployment, observability, reliability, security, and ongoing operations for significant technical areas.
- Design and operate distributed systems at cloud scale while balancing customer needs, performance, availability, cost, and maintainability.
- Drive technical strategies and execution across engineers and partner teams for ambiguous, cross-cutting problems.
- Operate highly available production services, including telemetry, monitoring, incident response, root-cause analysis, and corrective actions.
- Engage customers and partners to understand scenarios, translate requirements into technical solutions, and resolve complex issues.
- Use service data, customer feedback, and operational insights to guide engineering investments.
- Mentor engineers and provide design reviews, code reviews, operational reviews, and technical guidance.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field and 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, or equivalent experience.
- Strong design, coding, debugging, and problem-solving skills in C#, C++, Java, or another object-oriented programming language.
- Experience designing, building, shipping, and operating production-grade cloud services or large-scale distributed systems.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems fundamentals, including concurrency, fault tolerance, consistency, networking, storage, performance, and scalability.
- Experience owning complex technical components from design through production operations.
- Ability to work independently, make progress in ambiguous problem spaces, and drive alignment across teams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including explaining architectural decisions and trade-offs.
- Experience mentoring engineers and improving engineering practices through technical and operational reviews.
- Experience with Lucene, Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, or related search technologies.
- Preferred experience includes information retrieval, semantic search, vector search, retrieval-augmented generation, agentic AI, knowledge retrieval systems, Azure or another large-scale cloud platform, observability, capacity planning, performance optimization, reliability engineering, incident management, and live-site operations.
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including the Microsoft Cloud Background Check.
