Staff Software Engineer - Digital Platform

Base Salary
$135k - $160k/yr
Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, maintain, optimize, and troubleshoot software across Western Union’s product and platform areas.
- Build scalable microservices, enterprise APIs, applications, workflow automation, internal tools, and basic agents using AI coding agents.
- Serve as technical lead and service owner for distributed development teams, maintaining service quality, reliability, performance, and engineering metrics.
- Review designs and code across scrum teams and enforce service-level and architectural standards.
- Coordinate issue resolution with operations, functional, and technical teams.
- Assess business needs and provide creative solutions aligned with emerging technology standards.
- Coach junior engineers and work independently on complex projects.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field with 5+ years of professional experience, or a master’s degree with 5+ years of experience; equivalent work experience may substitute for a degree.
- Demonstrated experience with modern programming languages and frameworks including Java, Spring Boot, DynamoDB or PostgreSQL, Kafka, Redis, and Apache Camel.
- At least 2 years of hands-on technical leadership experience designing and implementing large-scale microservices.
- At least 2 years of experience with agile development methodologies, Test Driven Development, and Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery.
- At least 1 year of experience with architecture design concepts and techniques and communicating those concepts to broad-based teams.
- At least 1 year of hands-on experience building and deploying microservices-based platforms at scale.
- At least 1 year of hands-on experience building enterprise-scale APIs for web and mobile applications.
- At least 1 year of experience designing and implementing AWS-based cloud architectures.
- At least 6 months of hands-on experience using AI coding agents to build or accelerate end-to-end software delivery.
- Preferred qualifications include FinTech experience and experience building external customer-facing applications with open-source technologies and front-end technology familiarity.
- Applicants must be currently authorized to work full-time in the United States.
