Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate highly reliable, scalable distributed systems handling Shopify money movement.
- Build and maintain financial infrastructure for accurate, reconciled, and trustworthy money movement.
- Develop within Shopify’s core platform using Ruby on Rails and build new services in Go.
- Partner with payments, commerce, finance, and data teams as well as external global providers.
- Own ambiguous, high-impact problems from approach definition through production delivery.
- Participate in an incident-response on-call rotation and collaborate asynchronously across time zones.
- Use AI tools to accelerate engineering workflows, proof of concept, and day-to-day development quality.
Requirements
- Strong backend engineering experience with depth in distributed systems, service design, and production operations.
- Experience designing, building, and operating reliable, scalable systems requiring strong guarantees around consistency, fault tolerance, idempotency, recovery, or data integrity.
- Strong system design, problem-solving, judgment, and ownership in ambiguous environments.
- Proficiency in a backend language such as Ruby and/or Go.
- Excellent written communication and ability to collaborate across time zones with internal teams and external partners.
- Willingness to occasionally attend meetings or calls outside standard working hours.
- Preferred experience includes payments, fintech, financial systems, money movement, ledgers, accounting primitives, cross-border commerce, duties, taxes, foreign exchange, compliance, Ruby on Rails, Go, production operations, and on-call support.
