Responsibilities
- Lead the architecture and evolution of APIs, integration patterns, governance processes, and technical standards.
- Translate mission and technical requirements into scalable API architectures and implementation strategies.
- Define API lifecycle, versioning, backward-compatibility, change-management, monitoring, and operational standards.
- Guide configuration and operation of Apigee and Gravitee gateways, policies, routing, security controls, developer portals, and lifecycle processes.
- Establish standards for RESTful APIs, OpenAPI specifications, JSON schemas, interoperability, and reusable integration patterns.
- Define authentication, authorization, encryption, rate-limiting, threat-protection, auditing, and zero-trust security patterns.
- Lead architecture reviews, resolve complex cross-system integration challenges, and ensure alignment with Department of War standards.
- Guide integrations across cloud-native, microservices, event-driven, and service-oriented architectures.
- Mentor engineers and communicate architecture decisions, risks, and tradeoffs to technical and nontechnical audiences.
Requirements
- 9+ years of relevant API architecture, integration, or software engineering experience.
- Experience leading enterprise API architecture design and implementation for large-scale distributed systems.
- Advanced knowledge of API design, lifecycle management, interface governance, and integration patterns.
- Hands-on experience with Apigee, Gravitee, or comparable enterprise API management platforms.
- Experience with API gateway architecture, policies, routing, rate limits, security controls, monitoring, and developer portals.
- Experience developing API specifications with OpenAPI, Swagger, JSON Schema, or similar frameworks.
- Experience establishing API governance, standards, reusable patterns, versioning, backward compatibility, and change-management strategies.
- Experience with OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, JWT, PKI, API security, zero-trust principles, and secure software development.
- Experience integrating APIs across cloud-native, microservices, event-driven, or service-oriented architectures.
- Experience with cloud platforms, containerized applications, automated testing, and CI/CD validation.
- Experience leading architecture reviews, mentoring engineers, and influencing technical direction.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field preferred, with equivalent combinations of education and relevant experience considered.
- U.S. citizenship and an active Department of War Secret or higher clearance are required.
- Preferred qualifications include Apigee or Gravitee migrations, federal or enterprise data-platform experience, asynchronous messaging, streaming integration, Kubernetes, Docker, Istio, Linkerd, and secure API work in classified or regulated environments.
- Currently holding or obtaining within 30 days an approved certification such as SecurityX, CCSP, Cloud+, CSSLP, FITSP-D, GDSA, or GSEC is preferred.
