Responsibilities
- Own firmware development for key parts of the core automation platform from requirements and architecture through implementation, verification, and production support.
- Write and review robust, maintainable, and testable C firmware for ARM microcontrollers, primarily STM32.
- Design and maintain automated unit, integration, and hardware-in-the-loop tests for embedded firmware.
- Translate system needs into firmware requirements and interfaces with cross-disciplinary engineering and biology teams.
- Make and communicate technical decisions, participate in design discussions and code reviews, and support other engineers.
- Debug complex embedded-system issues using debug probes, oscilloscopes, multimeters, and logic analysers.
- Use Linux-based development tools and environments.
- Support and occasionally develop custom internal test equipment.
- Build supporting tools and simple debugging, testing, or internal-user GUIs using Python, C#, or Java.
- Depending on experience, contribute to electronics design, hard real-time motion and sensing algorithms, Docker-based environments, and embedded Linux interfaces.
Requirements
- Strong track record designing and delivering embedded systems with independent technical ownership.
- Extensive professional experience developing firmware in C and/or C++ on ARM microcontrollers, ideally STM32.
- Strong experience developing and maintaining automated embedded-system tests within continuous integration workflows.
- Confidence working directly with hardware and independently debugging systems at code and signal level.
- Strong ability to interpret component datasheets and electronics schematics for design and debugging.
- Collaborative and entrepreneurial approach with the ability to explain technical trade-offs and work across disciplines.
