Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end architecture across iOS, Android/TV, web, GraphQL, backend microservices, data stores, and streaming pipelines.
  • Drive the design and evolution of the federated GraphQL platform, including subgraph boundaries, schema governance, entity ownership, and versioning.
  • Architect low-latency, high-throughput event-driven systems for live scores, play-by-play, notifications, and other real-time sports data.
  • Define API contracts, data-fetching patterns, performance standards, resilience patterns, observability, SLAs/SLOs, and capacity plans for Tier-1 services.
  • Partner with product, editorial, data, design, mobile, web, and engineering teams to translate business needs into scalable solutions.
  • Review technology choices and architecture designs, lead design reviews, and enforce coding, testing, CI/CD, benchmarking, and quality standards.
  • Mentor senior and mid-level engineers and contribute to long-term platform strategy and technical roadmaps.
  • Investigate and resolve cross-cutting production issues involving latency, data consistency, caching, memory, and stability.
  • Drive adoption of emerging technologies, including AI-assisted development and agentic AI capabilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 15+ years of software engineering experience delivering complex, large-scale distributed systems and platforms.
  • Deep hands-on expertise with TypeScript, Node.js, and modern backend frameworks such as Express.
  • Strong GraphQL expertise, ideally including Apollo Server, Apollo Federation, subgraphs, gateways/routers, schema governance, and DataLoader.
  • Experience with React web and native mobile client architecture using Swift/iOS and/or Kotlin/Android.
  • Strong relational and NoSQL data-layer experience with PostgreSQL, Prisma/ORMs, MongoDB, DynamoDB, Redis, and ElastiCache.
  • Experience designing event-driven and streaming architectures with Apache Kafka and/or RabbitMQ/SQS, including Protobuf-based schema or contract management.
  • Experience operating Tier-1, high-uptime, low-latency systems with large and spiky traffic volumes.
  • 5+ years of cloud experience, preferably AWS, including Kubernetes/EKS, Docker, Helm, Terraform, and Terragrunt.
  • Strong grounding in resilience patterns, observability, Datadog, OpenTelemetry, structured logging, and production operations.
  • Experience with GitHub Actions, automated testing, code-quality tooling, JWT/authentication, and secrets management.
  • Excellent problem-solving, debugging, performance-tuning, communication, leadership, and cross-team influence skills.
  • Preferred qualifications include Elixir/OTP, Phoenix, GenStage, APNs/FCM, AWS Lambda, multi-region systems, AI-assisted development, agentic AI/LLM features, RAG, tool or function calling, agent orchestration, evaluations, guardrails, vector stores, embeddings, prompt and context engineering, MCP, and open-source or GraphQL/streaming community contributions.
