Responsibilities
- Design and implement complex, data-rich product surfaces on Horizon from initial sketch through production.
- Identify opportunities to improve features, flows, and smaller usability issues.
- Participate in product kickoffs, understand users and product context, and help define product direction.
- Champion accessibility, performance, responsiveness, animation, typography, and maintainability, including WCAG 2.2 AA and Core Web Vitals.
- Shape, maintain, and evolve scalable design systems and component libraries.
- Run design audits and pull request reviews, mentor designers and frontend engineers, and establish reusable patterns.
- Help define how Design Engineering operates and scales at Spear AI.
Requirements
- Typically 7+ years of design engineering, design-focused frontend, or equivalent experience, including senior individual-contributor work on a high-bar team.
- Deep understanding of design workflows and their technical constraints.
- Expertise with Tailwind CSS and modern CSS fundamentals and layouts.
- Strong knowledge of WCAG 2.2, accessibility practices, performance metrics, Core Web Vitals, and Lighthouse.
- Experience with React, Next.js, and TypeScript.
- Demonstrated experience designing and building design systems or component libraries used by other engineering teams.
- Strong product/UI design foundation, including layout, color theory, typography, and visual hierarchy.
- Fluency in Figma, including variables, modes, auto layout, and component architecture that mirrors code.
- Experience designing data-dense interfaces such as tables, charts, dashboards, and real-time displays.
- Strong written and verbal communication, judgment, collaboration, adaptability, and mentoring experience.
- Geospatial or mapping experience with technologies such as Mapbox, MapLibre, deck.gl, or Cesium is a bonus.
- Experience working in regulated or secure environments such as defense, finance, or healthcare is a bonus.
