Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain the OpenTelemetry Python SDK and instrumentation libraries.
- Build Python instrumentation for AI agents, model calls, tool execution, asynchronous code, and generative AI workflows.
- Use profiling and benchmarks to improve Python SDK performance and evaluate implementation tradeoffs.
- Collaborate with OpenTelemetry maintainers, vendors, SIGs, users, and open-source communities on specifications, APIs, and implementation decisions.
- Own projects from ambiguous problem definition through design, implementation, testing, documentation, and release.
- Contribute to team technical direction and OpenTelemetry strategy, mentor colleagues, and promote best practices.
- Join customer conversations, investigate instrumentation issues, and provide fixes and practical guidance to GTM, Product, and Support teams.
Requirements
- 8+ years of software development experience.
- Strong Python proficiency and experience debugging production software, language internals, libraries, and asynchronous code.
- Interest in AI applications and agent systems; prior AI systems experience is helpful but not required.
- Experience or interest in working with open-source communities and collaborating with maintainers and users.
- Familiarity with Grafana, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, cloud-based software or systems engineering, and production operational risks.
- Experience with Python instrumentation, profiling, runtime diagnostics, asynchronous context propagation, or open-source observability projects is advantageous.
- Hands-on technical leadership experience, including setting technical direction and leading project teams, is advantageous.
- Experience instrumenting AI frameworks or agent workflows and Rust experience are advantageous.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work with distributed teams are required.
