Responsibilities
- Build and operate core components of Elastic’s next-generation Serverless Elasticsearch offering.
- Improve Elasticsearch support for concurrent and consistent indexing across multiple machines.
- Maintain cluster coordination as nodes join, leave, and move data while preserving safety and liveness.
- Scale Elasticsearch across increasing numbers of shards, nodes, and petabytes.
- Investigate and resolve performance, concurrency, and stability issues end-to-end.
- Support support engineers with difficult technical problems and own projects from design through delivery.
Requirements
- Deep background in distributed systems and consensus algorithms.
- Strong core Java skills, including standard-library data structures, concurrency constructs, and newer language features.
- Deep technical proficiency in algorithms.
- Experience understanding and working on complex, highly distributed systems rather than relying on off-the-shelf services.
- Ability to build and debug broad-impact features running across multiple machines.
- Ability to own projects from technical design through implementation in collaboration with others.
- Proven ability to use AI to accelerate development, debug complex systems, and optimize code while retaining ownership of outcomes.
- Ability to collaborate across teams, work across codebases, and operate autonomously in an asynchronous distributed environment.
- Bonus: experience with data stores, search, analytics, Lucene, the JDK, or asynchronous event-driven network frameworks such as Netty.
