Principal Member of Technical Staff (PMTS) / Staff Software Engineer – AI Platform (Agentic Systems)

Responsibilities
- Set technical strategy and architecture for Slack’s agentic operations platform and autonomous software factories.
- Build end-to-end autonomous pipelines for code generation, bug fixing, incident remediation, and production maintenance.
- Develop deterministic evaluation suites, regression harnesses, guardrails, telemetry, and observability frameworks for agentic systems.
- Design durable execution and state-management systems with tool integrations, human-in-the-loop approval gates, and rollback mechanisms.
- Define ownership, accountability, on-call, failure-detection, and remediation models for autonomous systems.
- Partner with platform teams and engineering groups to drive adoption of agentic workflows.
- Govern model and compute utilization, balancing intelligence, latency, token budgets, and cost.
- Mentor senior engineers, lead architectural reviews, and establish reusable technical patterns across the organization.
Requirements
- 10+ years of software engineering experience designing and delivering complex distributed systems at scale.
- Staff- or Principal-level technical judgment and organizational influence.
- Hands-on production experience building and shipping LLM-powered agents and multi-agent systems with orchestration, structured tool or function calling, retrieval/RAG, and context-window engineering.
- Experience making non-deterministic AI systems production-ready through deterministic evaluation suites, regression harnesses, guardrails, and LLM telemetry.
- Strong backend and distributed-systems foundations with accountability for uptime, latency, and reliability.
- Experience building autonomous code-generation pipelines, automated refactoring systems, or software factories across monolithic or multi-repository architectures.
- Experience designing agent evaluation frameworks, prompt/context-management layers, or LLM observability platforms for engineering teams.
- Preferred: deep experience with service orchestration or automated incident remediation at scale.
- Preferred: hands-on AWS, Kubernetes/EKS, and Terraform experience using reusable abstractions.
- Preferred: contributions to open-source agentic frameworks, developer tools, or the AI developer ecosystem.
- Preferred: familiarity with Anthropic Claude Tool Use, OpenAI function calling, Model Context Protocol/MCP, LangGraph, and the failure modes of modern frontier model APIs.

- The stated annual base salary ranges are $197,300–$313,700 generally and $237,700–$344,700 in select San Francisco and New York City metropolitan area locations; bonus, equity, and other incentives are separate.
