Responsibilities
- Maintain and improve Home Assistant OS support across Nabu Casa hardware platforms.
- Develop and maintain Buildroot configurations, board support packages, bootloader settings, partition layouts, system services, and build infrastructure.
- Support board bring-up and collaborate with the Hardware Team on new board development and validation.
- Investigate and resolve boot regressions, driver failures, hardware compatibility issues, update problems, kernel panics, and power-management defects.
- Improve operating-system performance, hardware utilisation, stability, reliability, security hardening, and device lifecycle support.
- Upstream patches to Linux, U-Boot, Buildroot, and related open-source projects as needed.
- Work with Home Assistant OS contributors, Open Home Foundation developers, silicon vendors, hardware partners, and open-source maintainers.
- Maintain operating-system CI pipelines and platform validation workflows.
- Document platform architecture, board support, debugging procedures, limitations, and technical decisions.
Requirements
- Strong embedded Linux experience with Buildroot, Yocto, or similar embedded operating-system environments.
- Deep understanding of Linux operating systems, system services, hardware bring-up, and platform reliability.
- Experience with bootloaders, partition layouts, OTA update systems, and embedded device lifecycle management.
- Ability to work across hardware and software boundaries, including reading schematics and datasheets.
- Experience with cross-compilation toolchains and low-level debugging tools such as serial consoles, GDB, strace, JTAG, oscilloscopes, or logic analysers.
- Ability to read and write C/C++ for lower-level or driver-related work.
- Strong Python skills for automation, tooling, and platform scripting.
- Familiarity with embedded operating-system security hardening practices.
- Experience with Home Assistant OS or similar embedded Linux platforms is a strong plus.
- Open-source project contributions, Home Assistant familiarity, Elixir or Nerves OS experience, ARM or Raspberry Pi experience, smart-home or IoT platform experience, and large-scale distributed hardware deployment experience are advantageous.
- Ability to work autonomously, troubleshoot methodically, learn unfamiliar systems quickly, communicate clearly in writing, and collaborate in distributed open-source environments.
