Responsibilities
- Own and evolve the GraphQL API layer serving critical search, discovery, and checkout experiences.
- Design schemas and query patterns that balance consumer flexibility with performance and reliability at scale.
- Establish API Platform standards covering schema governance, deprecation policies, federation patterns, and query complexity controls.
- Identify and resolve production performance bottlenecks such as N+1 patterns, over-fetching, and slow resolvers.
- Partner with product engineering teams as an internal platform owner by unblocking and onboarding teams and improving engineering quality.
- Drive query tracing, latency analysis, and SLA monitoring for the GraphQL layer.
- Mentor engineers across the organization on GraphQL best practices.
Requirements
- 5+ years of backend software engineering experience, including at least 3 years focused on GraphQL in production.
- Deep hands-on GraphQL expertise in schema design, federation, resolvers, DataLoader patterns, persisted queries, and query cost analysis.
- Experience operating high-throughput, customer-facing GraphQL APIs where reliability and latency affect user experience.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems and designing observable, resilient services that operate under load.
- Fluency in at least one of Java, Go, or Node.js.
- Ability to prioritize, manage stakeholders, communicate effectively, and collaborate across teams.
- A proactive, positive, customer-centric, and data-driven approach with an interest in mentoring and knowledge sharing.
- Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
- Familiarity with GraphQL caching strategies, including CDN-level caching, persisted queries, and response caching, is preferred.
- Experience building internal developer platforms or managing APIs as a product is preferred.
- Prior e-commerce or startup experience is preferred.
