Responsibilities
- Design and train embedding models for representation learning using approaches such as transformer encoders and Two Tower architectures.
- Fine-tune and evaluate language models for custom use cases and content enrichment.
- Contribute to organizational practices for evaluation and responsible AI use.
- Implement and deploy robust and reproducible machine learning and AI research while considering risks and trade-offs.
- Adapt or develop machine learning and AI algorithms when existing techniques are insufficient, while implementing simple approaches where appropriate.
- Communicate complex machine learning and AI concepts while collaborating with engineering, analytics, product management, marketing, editorial, and executive leadership.
- Support The New York Times' commitment to journalistic independence and its mission.
Requirements
- PhD, or a master's degree plus 2 years of experience, or 3+ years of work experience in machine learning, statistics, computational social science, applied mathematics, or another quantitative/computational discipline.
- At least 2 years of experience with open-source machine learning or statistical analysis tools.
- At least 2 years of coding experience with Python.
- At least 2 years of experience with SQL and manipulating large structured or unstructured datasets for analysis.
- At least 1 year of experience with deep learning architectures, fine-tuning, embeddings, and PyTorch or TensorFlow.
- Preferred: at least 1 year of experience with information retrieval or search systems.
- Preferred: at least 1 year of experience translating ambiguous business questions into machine learning problems.
- Preferred: at least 1 year of experience building internal or consumer-facing data products.
