Responsibilities
- Own the technical direction and operational reliability of the multi-repository build ecosystem.
- Maintain C/C++, Go, and npm build workflows, including compilers, linkers, dependencies, and configuration.
- Standardize local, CI, and release build environments using containers and host tooling.
- Develop and maintain automation for component builds, full-product builds, packaging, and deployment preparation.
- Diagnose compiler, linker, dependency, packaging, platform, and developer-versus-CI failures.
- Produce and validate versioned container images and Debian/RPM packages, including installation, upgrades, and rollback.
- Integrate builds with CI platforms and artifact repositories such as Nexus, JFrog Artifactory, Harbor, and Quay.
- Improve clean and incremental build performance through caching, parallelism, dependency tracking, and measurement.
- Evaluate, benchmark, and lead staged migration from SCons to suitable build technologies.
- Support multiple processor architectures, Linux distributions, build variants, and release branches.
- Write technical designs, set standards, review changes, mentor engineers, and drive cross-team decisions.
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience in software, build engineering, developer infrastructure, or a closely related field.
- Strong Linux compilation and linking knowledge with GCC or Clang and build systems such as SCons, Make, CMake, Meson, Ninja, or Bazel.
- Strong Python and Bash skills for maintainable build tooling and diagnostics.
- Practical experience with Go build tooling and Node.js/npm workflows.
- Experience creating Docker-based build environments and multi-stage images.
- Hands-on experience with Debian and RPM packaging, dependency management, versioning, installation, upgrades, and publication.
- Experience integrating build systems with GitHub Actions, Jenkins, GitLab CI, or equivalent platforms and artifact repositories.
- Strong troubleshooting, documentation, communication, ownership, and cross-team technical leadership skills.
- Preferred experience includes build acceleration with ccache, sccache, distributed builds, or remote execution.
- Preferred experience includes hermetic builds, dependency pinning, provenance, SBOMs, signing, and software supply chain security.
- Preferred experience migrating legacy build systems to CMake, Meson/Ninja, Bazel, or comparable platforms.
- Preferred background in storage, networking, operating systems, compilers, or other performance-critical software.
- Preferred experience with build-health metrics, engineering standards, documentation, and self-service developer workflows.
