Responsibilities
- Set technical direction, architecture, and long-term engineering strategy for the Platform Reliability Engineering team
- Design and build load shedding, circuit breakers, rate limiting, ingress, egress, and traffic-control systems
- Define stable interfaces and libraries for other platform teams
- Lead projects from scoping and design through rollout across multiple platform teams
- Raise engineering quality through code reviews, design discussions, and technical mentorship
- Partner with infrastructure teams to embed reliability into Asana’s architecture
- Debug complex production problems and prevent recurring failures
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience building and operating backend systems at scale
- Strong software engineering, production coding, and systems design background
- Experience leading technical projects and influencing technical direction across teams
- Familiarity with distributed systems patterns including backpressure, graceful degradation, and capacity planning
- Experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure; Terraform; and monitoring tools such as Datadog or similar
- Experience defining and working with explicit reliability and performance targets for production systems
- Strong communication, collaboration, technical mentorship, and decision-making skills
- Curiosity about AI tools and emerging technologies and willingness to use them to improve productivity, collaboration, or decision-making
