Responsibilities
- Build and maintain the host provisioning stack using PXE boot, Ansible, and burn-in agents.
- Evolve the orchestration engine that manages clusters, containers, and virtual machines.
- Optimize bin-packing algorithms for utilization, performance, and cost.
- Own internal fleet-management tooling used by Railway engineers.
- Build internal observability and alerting for infrastructure and fleet issues.
- Design and maintain CI pipelines for safely shipping infrastructure code.
- Define immutable infrastructure that can be torn down, failed over, and reconstituted using Terraform and Ansible.
- Build Go and Rust gRPC services capable of supporting millions of users.
- Write Engineering Requirement Documents covering ideas, implementation tasks, and success monitoring.
Requirements
- Strong understanding of distributed systems and operating fault-tolerant, resilient, and scalable services.
- Hands-on experience with bare-metal provisioning, configuration management, and preparing hardware for production.
- Experience building and operating internal tools with attention to developer experience.
- Ability to assess system longevity and plan for systems to evolve or be replaced.
- Ability to implement solutions, define error-boundary monitoring, and document operational requirements.
- Strong prioritization and direction-setting skills in an ambiguous early-stage startup environment.
- Grit to investigate problems, implement and scale solutions, and replace them when necessary.
- Strong communication skills for explaining solutions and driving implementation.
