Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain MetricFlow features covering metric definitions, query compilation, dimensional modeling, and SQL generation across multiple data warehouses
- Own MetricFlow as an open-source project by triaging issues, reviewing external pull requests, managing releases, and engaging contributors through GitHub and Slack
- Collaborate with dbt Cloud, dbt Core, and Semantic Layer service engineers to integrate MetricFlow across the dbt ecosystem
- Improve the performance, reliability, and observability of metric query execution at scale
- Partner with product, design, and developer-relations teams to turn customer and community feedback into shipped improvements
- Write technical documentation, RFCs, and design documents
- Mentor engineers through code review, pairing, and technical guidance
Requirements
- Strong professional software engineering experience and a track record of shipping production systems
- Deep proficiency in Python, including modern typing, testing practices, and packaging
- Strong SQL fundamentals and an understanding of analytical query engines and data warehouse execution
- Experience designing systems involving parsing, compilation, or transformation, such as query planners, DSL compilers, type systems, or rule-based engines
- Solid understanding of clean APIs, modularity, testability, and backward compatibility
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for explaining complex technical tradeoffs
- Experience working in distributed, asynchronous teams
- Prior contribution to or maintenance of a popular open-source project is preferred
- Familiarity with dbt, MetricFlow, LookML, Cube, or other semantic-layer technologies is preferred
- Background in data warehousing internals, query optimization, or analytical SQL dialects is preferred
- Experience with CI/CD, GitHub Actions, and Python library release engineering is preferred
- Exposure to developer-facing APIs, SDKs, or CLIs is preferred
