Responsibilities
- Own the design and implementation of portable libraries used across iOS, Android, and web.
- Build fast, safe, reliable production libraries using Rust and C++.
- Shape interfaces, safety models, API ergonomics, and cross-runtime architecture.
- Lead through hands-on coding and influence Mobile Platform technical direction as an individual contributor.
- Design native interop and bindings across system languages, iOS, Android, and JavaScript runtimes.
- Communicate technical decisions through design documents and collaborate with engineers consuming the libraries.
- Ensure the libraries ship to production and run reliably across Canva’s supported devices and runtimes.
Requirements
- Production experience building mobile software on both iOS and Android.
- Production experience shipping code in Rust; experience with Rust or C++ for portable libraries.
- Ability to operate effectively in ambiguous problem spaces where the problem and solution are not fully defined.
- Understanding of cross-platform architecture, ABI boundaries, memory safety across language barriers, and foreign function interfaces.
- Strong knowledge of native iOS and Android fundamentals beyond the JavaScript layer.
- Experience designing system-language library APIs that feel native to mobile and frontend engineers.
- Sufficient React Native runtime fluency to understand consumption from the JavaScript side.
- Strong engineering fundamentals, including data structures and complexity.
- Ability to write clear technical design documents and communicate effectively across engineering disciplines.
- Experience using AI agents in real work and a perspective on AI’s impact on mobile and systems engineering.
- Preferred experience with live migrations to new mobile architectures, React Native or Expo contributions, or mobile CI/CD and over-the-air updates at scale.
