Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain the OpenTelemetry Python SDK and instrumentation libraries in collaboration with maintainers, vendors, and open-source communities.
- Build Python instrumentation for AI agents, model calls, tool execution, asynchronous code, and generative AI conventions.
- Evaluate and improve Python SDK performance using profiling and benchmarks while balancing runtime overhead, compatibility, and maintainability.
- Own projects from ambiguous problem definition through design, implementation, testing, documentation, and release.
- Set technical direction, mentor team members, promote OpenTelemetry best practices, and contribute to team and company strategy.
- Partner with Product, Support, and go-to-market teams, participate in customer conversations, investigate instrumentation issues, and turn findings into fixes and guidance.
Requirements
- 8+ years of software development experience.
- Strong Python proficiency with experience debugging production software, language internals, libraries, and asynchronous code.
- Interest in AI applications and agent systems; prior experience building AI systems is helpful but not required.
- Experience working in or contributing to open-source communities and willingness to participate actively in the OpenTelemetry community.
- Familiarity with Grafana, Prometheus, and OpenTelemetry, plus experience with cloud-based software or systems engineering and production environments.
- Experience with open-source observability projects, Python instrumentation, profiling, runtime diagnostics, asynchronous context propagation, technical leadership, AI framework or agent instrumentation, or Rust is preferred.
