Responsibilities
- Own the end-to-end design and implementation of IPv6 features across the SonicWall firewall networking stack, including routing, interface addressing, DHCPv6, NDP, MLDv2, and IPv6 policy-based routing.
- Close IPv4/IPv6 feature gaps across VPN tunnel interfaces, IPsec/IKEv2, SSL-VPN, Syslog, SNMP, and NAT64 for dual-stack and IPv6-only operation.
- Architect and optimize high-performance IPv6 dataplane paths for packet forwarding, classification, ACL matching, and session lookup.
- Diagnose and resolve IPv6 interoperability, conformance, and performance issues involving neighbor discovery, prefix delegation, ICMPv6 errors, and fragmentation.
- Define and drive compliance with IETF IPv6 RFCs and related protocol extensions.
- Collaborate with Platform, Security, Data Platform, and QA teams to integrate and validate IPv6 changes.
- Evaluate IPv6 transition mechanisms including 464XLAT, MAP-T, CLAT, and SRv6.
- Lead IPv6 architecture decisions, scalability strategy, technical roadmap, and government or federal compliance efforts.
- Act as the IPv6 subject-matter expert, mentor engineers, and lead cross-team technical design reviews.
Requirements
- 7–9+ years of hands-on C/C++ systems-level development for networking platforms such as routers, Layer-3 switches, CGNAT devices, or network security appliances.
- Production implementation experience with IPv6 addressing, subnetting, DHCPv6-PD, NDP, Router Advertisements, MLDv2, OSPFv3, BGP with IPv6 AFI/SAFI, RIPng, IPsec/IKEv2 over IPv6, IPv6 ACLs, PBR, and traffic classification.
- Strong understanding of Ethernet, VLANs, 802.1Q, bridging, static and dynamic routing, NAT, firewall state tables, and VPN tunneling across IPv4 and IPv6.
- Experience with high-performance packet-processing frameworks such as DPDK, ODP, OFP, or XDP/eBPF is advantageous.
- Experience validating IPv6 implementations against IETF RFCs and government IPv6-ready test suites such as USGv6 and IPv6-Ready Logo Phase-2 is desirable.
- Proficiency with tcpdump, Wireshark, GDB, kernel trace tools, and network-emulation environments such as GNS3 or EVE-NG.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to lead technical discussions, write specifications, and represent engineering in architecture and product reviews.
- Experience with government or federal IPv6 compliance, SRv6, MPLS over IPv6, WireGuard over IPv6, SonicWall NGFW or similar embedded security firmware, and automated IPv6 testing with RFC 2544, IXIA, or Spirent is preferred.
