Responsibilities
- Own and prioritize Mendo’s AI roadmap with product and engineering leadership.
- Make architecture, model, build-versus-buy, cost, latency, and quality decisions.
- Define evaluation, regression-testing, and MLOps standards across engineering squads.
- Train, fine-tune, evaluate, and operate proprietary language models, including on-device small language models.
- Curate datasets, golden sets, and evaluation harnesses.
- Monitor and debug production AI features, including retrieval quality, prompt drift, and on-device model behavior.
- Review AI work across the product and keep models, prompts, and pipelines current.
- Mentor the existing AI engineer, support engineers working on AI topics, and help hire future AI team members.
- Document AI systems and decisions and communicate technical trade-offs to non-technical colleagues.
Requirements
- 6+ years of experience in ML/AI engineering, including shipping and operating AI models or features at production scale.
- Proven technical leadership through engineering standards, architecture decisions, and mentoring.
- Hands-on experience with LLM fine-tuning, retrieval-augmented generation, embeddings, golden sets, LLM-as-judge evaluation, and regression tests.
- Experience monitoring and optimizing production AI systems for cost, latency, and quality.
- Solid software engineering fundamentals, including testing, CI, and observability.
- Strong Python skills and the ability to work across a TypeScript product codebase.
- Experience with small language models and on-device or on-premise model deployment is preferred.
- Excellent professional and technical command of French and English.
- Pragmatic, product-minded, evidence-driven, collaborative, and comfortable leading through influence.
