Responsibilities

  • Design and build shared libraries, framework layers, and internal services used across Proton products.
  • Develop API-related functionality in PHP and performance- or memory-safety-sensitive components and microservices in Rust.
  • Own libraries and initiatives end to end, including design, implementation, documentation, versioning, adoption, and migration paths.
  • Create reusable abstractions from recurring patterns and improve build times, local development, test ergonomics, debuggability, and developer experience.
  • Define and enforce healthy module boundaries, dependency direction, and monorepo architecture through RFCs, rules, and code changes.
  • Collaborate with product teams through design reviews, integration work, and pull requests to drive seamless adoption of shared components.

Requirements

  • At least five years of experience building and operating production backend systems, with a focus on modern PHP.
  • Working knowledge of Rust or clear evidence of being able to learn it quickly, including understanding ownership and lifetimes.
  • Strong judgment in API design, including naming, defaults, error handling, and library-versus-service boundaries.
  • Experience working with architecture at codebase scale, including module boundaries, dependency direction, and monorepo health.
  • Experience evolving shared code used by other teams without breaking existing consumers.
  • A security-minded approach to designing abstractions and anticipating misuse.
  • Ability to influence adoption of internal libraries and carry designs through cross-team disagreements.
  • Preferred experience with Domain-Driven Design or complex domain modeling, developer tooling, platform or developer-experience teams, open-source libraries, incremental architecture or language migrations, applied cryptography, key management, end-to-end encryption, or CI/CD.

Benefits

  • Meaningful work protecting the privacy of millions of users.
  • Collaborative, diverse teams and opportunities for significant ownership and learning.
  • Hardware and software needed to do the job.
  • Health coverage, retirement options, generous leave, and wellness support.
  • Stock options and company ownership opportunities.
  • Primarily in-person collaboration at offices including Geneva, Zürich, and Barcelona, with the posting marked onsite.
  • Company-provided lunch and snacks at offices.
  • Public transport, bike allowances, or parking support.
  • Flexible working hours and schedule ownership.
