Responsibilities
- Design and ship expense features in Java/Spring Boot backend services and/or TypeScript web applications, using Python or TypeScript for AI services where appropriate.
- Own APIs and event-driven flows handling money, receipts, policy decisions, and financial data at company scale.
- Build and extend LLM-backed agents with tool use, grounding, streaming, session memory, retrieval, and evaluation capabilities.
- Improve document extraction and receipt auto-itemization for quality, tax-field accuracy, latency, cost, and provider failover.
- Instrument production systems with observability, quality dashboards, chat satisfaction metrics, and extraction accuracy measurements.
- Partner with Product and Design on employee, administrator, mobile, and unified travel-and-expense AI experiences.
- Review financial-system changes for correctness, including idempotency, auditability, permissions, and prevention of silent partial writes.
- Mentor engineers and write designs that distributed teams can implement.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of production software development experience; Staff-level candidates require 8 or more years.
- Strong computer science fundamentals and depth in at least one of Java/Spring Boot, modern TypeScript, or Python services.
- Experience with relational data modeling, APIs, AWS, and preferably messaging systems such as Kafka.
- Experience shipping AI in a real product, including LLM APIs, tool or function calling, retrieval-augmented generation, evaluation, or document and vision extraction.
- Ability to discuss AI failure modes including hallucination, cost, latency, prompt injection, and personally identifiable information.
- Comfort working in financial or workflow-heavy domains such as expenses, payments, ERP, or tax.
- Strong written design and code-review skills, with a focus on production quality, tests, CI/CD, observability, and incident ownership.
- Based in Berlin or London or willing to relocate, with readiness to collaborate across US, Israel, and India time zones.
- Preferred experience includes document OCR, VAT/GST, multi-currency systems, policy engines, agent frameworks, evaluation platforms, or mobile AI user experiences.
