Base Salary
$160k - $285k/yr
Responsibilities
- Architect, build, and deploy backend services, APIs, and data pipelines for Workday’s semantic and context layer.
- Design and optimize enterprise RAG pipelines with embedding generation, intelligent chunking, and vector database integration.
- Build distributed query execution and federation layers using technologies such as Trino to connect transactional systems and data lakes.
- Develop dynamic context and memory workflows with LlamaIndex, LangChain, GraphRAG, or similar orchestration frameworks.
- Implement privacy, tenant isolation, role-based access control, and other data governance guardrails in retrieval and context systems.
- Optimize low-latency retrieval, high-throughput LLM interactions, token management, and context-window efficiency.
- Mentor junior and mid-level engineers, lead code and design reviews, and establish engineering practices for a 0-to-1 product area.
Requirements
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience focused on backend architecture, data engineering, or distributed systems.
- 5+ years of hands-on programming experience in Java, Python, Scala, or Go.
- At least 1 year of dedicated experience building production-grade LLM applications, RAG pipelines, vector search systems, or knowledge graphs.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or an equivalent technical field; a master’s degree is preferred.
- Experience building or optimizing distributed SQL query engines such as Trino, Presto, or Spark and bridging operational and analytical data stores.
- Deep understanding of AI orchestration frameworks such as LangChain, LlamaIndex, and Semantic Kernel, as well as embedding models.
- Experience architecting scalable, high-performance REST/gRPC APIs and microservices.
- Experience handling sensitive, highly regulated data and understanding enterprise security boundaries and data governance.
- Ability to work autonomously in ambiguous, open-ended AI product environments and translate goals into scalable engineering systems.
- Experience with the Workday platform or enterprise SaaS architectures is a strong plus.
Benefits
- Annual base salary ranges from $160,100 to $285,100 depending on location, with the primary Pleasanton range listed as $190,100 to $285,100; bonus and annual refresh stock grants may also be available.
- Flexible work model requiring at least 50% of each quarter in the office or in the field, with remote home-office roles also able to gather in company offices.
