Responsibilities
- Build and maintain software used by graphics developers to render and publish visual journalism.
- Build and improve pipelines for ingesting, processing, and displaying large datasets such as election results and statistical models.
- Facilitate and guide contributions from other developers to core software libraries.
- Maintain automatic cloud tooling for high-frequency publishing, data ingestion, and data analysis.
- Sketch and rapidly prototype interactive applications, graphics, and multimedia story forms.
- Ensure compliance with web performance and accessibility standards.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team under news deadlines.
- Support the organization’s journalistic independence and mission.
Requirements
- 5+ years of relevant experience.
- Expertise developing interactive graphics, data dashboards, and websites with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
- Expertise building software and tooling for developing and publishing websites and interactive applications.
- Demonstrated experience with Svelte or other modern web technologies.
- Expertise managing applications in complex cloud computing environments.
- Portfolio or code repositories demonstrating interactive applications and websites from concept to launch.
- Cover letter describing the candidate’s role in specific projects and the software tools and systems created.
- Preferred: experience meeting deadlines and adapting to a daily, unpredictable news production environment.
- Preferred: interface design and information graphic design skills.
- Preferred: curiosity about the news and innovative approaches to storytelling.
- Preferred: experience creating news graphics in varied formats and timeframes.
