Principal Software Engineer – IBM z/OS Connectivity

Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and maintain native software for connectivity and integration with IBM z/OS environments.
- Build integrations with C/JNI, JES2/JES3 job submission and monitoring, TSO command execution, and SMF-based event monitoring.
- Extend identity and credential management with per-user authorization and security capabilities.
- Develop systems-level custom wire protocols, cryptographic functionality, and native z/OS platform integrations.
- Troubleshoot system-level issues across mainframe, Unix, and Java environments and improve reliability, performance, security, and scalability.
- Partner with product managers, architects, and engineers to translate customer requirements into technical solutions.
- Participate in architecture discussions, design reviews, code reviews, testing, and release planning.
- Use and independently verify AI-assisted coding, testing, and documentation work against authoritative IBM z/OS references.
- Document protocols, security models, and platform prerequisites for field and support teams.
- Validate technical assumptions on live LPARs and contribute to architectural decisions.
Requirements
- 10+ years of professional software engineering experience with strong Java 8+ skills.
- Hands-on IBM z/OS systems integration experience with JES2/JES3, TSO, RACF/ACF2/Top Secret, SMF, and USS.
- Strong working proficiency in C.
- Experience with socket programming, custom binary framing, character-encoding conversion, and TLS/keyring security.
- Experience implementing cryptographic primitives to specification with standard libraries such as Java JCE, including key exchange and symmetric cipher modes.
- Strong concurrency and multithreading skills, including experience building resilient, long-running daemon processes.
- Ability to work from primary technical sources such as IBM manuals and RACF/SMF references.
- Experience with Git, Docker, Kubernetes, and modern DevOps practices.
- Fluency with AI tools and the judgment to identify incorrect AI-generated recommendations in specialized mainframe contexts.
- Experience with workload automation products such as Tidal, CA-7, Control-M, Stonebranch, BMC, or RunMyJobs is preferred.
- Experience with Sysplex/Parallel Sysplex clustering, z/OSMF REST APIs, CA-Panvalet, CA-Librarian, z/OS Assembler, or mainframe migration and modernization is preferred.
