Base Salary
$139k - $235k/yr
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with product managers and engineers to understand user needs, shape requirements, and divide complex projects into shippable iterations.
- Design and implement performant, reliable backend and real-time features in GitLab’s monolith, including GraphQL and RESTful APIs and subscriptions.
- Build and evolve portfolio planning capabilities such as work item hierarchy, status rollup, and capacity planning.
- Improve PostgreSQL performance through query and write optimization, indexing, denormalization, and partitioning, and move suitable workloads to Elasticsearch or ClickHouse.
- Create proofs of concept, maintain extensive automated test coverage, and support safe rollouts with feature flags and observability.
- Mentor engineers and open source contributors through code reviews, pairing, feedback, contributor issues, and hackathons.
- Participate in on-call rotations, troubleshoot production issues, perform root cause analysis, and improve development and review processes.
Requirements
- Senior-level backend product engineering experience with a current focus on Ruby and Ruby on Rails.
- Full stack experience and an understanding of how complex modern frontends work.
- Strong PostgreSQL skills, including query and write optimization, indexing, denormalization, and partitioning at scale.
- Experience designing and evolving GraphQL and/or RESTful APIs with scalability, backward compatibility, and clear frontend contracts in mind.
- Experience leading projects involving several engineers over multiple months.
- Experience improving large automated test suites, including test performance and reliability.
- Experience supporting code reviews, feedback, hiring, career development, and mentoring.
- Experience integrating artificial intelligence into development workflows.
- Experience with Elasticsearch, ClickHouse, or Python is a plus.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for asynchronous, distributed work.
