Responsibilities

  • Design and build core streaming infrastructure that separates process data access from the live execution engine using durable, low-cost storage.
  • Build supported customer-facing integrations with systems such as Kafka so customers can export process data into their own tools.
  • Rebuild how Camunda’s analytics product consumes and serves process data at scale outside the engine’s critical path.
  • Make architecture decisions concerning consistency and durability across distributed streaming pipelines as part of a small, high-ownership team.
  • Lead medium-to-large engineering initiatives from solution design and planning through cross-team coordination and predictable delivery.
  • Participate in L3 support and on-call rotations, investigate production data-layer issues with Support and SRE, and feed findings back into the product.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience as a backend engineer using Java, with a strong focus on distributed or data-intensive systems.
  • Hands-on experience with object storage systems such as S3, GCS, or Azure and reliable, idempotent upload and commit protocols.
  • Experience with Kafka or a similar streaming or event-log system.
  • Solid grounding in distributed systems fundamentals.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive technical initiatives through ambiguity in systems that are still being designed.
  • Proven experience leading engineering initiatives lasting 3+ months from design through delivery.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills in a remote-first environment, including translating requirements with Product and participating in code reviews.
  • Ability or willingness to use the Camunda product.
  • Preferred experience with Apache Iceberg, Parquet, lakehouse or data-lake architectures, RocksDB or similar embedded state stores, Apache Flink, stateful processing, local state backends, checkpointing, or object-storage-native streaming architectures such as WarpStream.

Benefits

  • Fully remote and global work arrangement with flexible working options, a home office budget, coworking-space support, and flexible time off.
  • Annual Kickoff, team offsites, Camundi Connection Budgets, meetup contributions, and local gatherings.
  • Locally tailored healthcare, Modern Health mental wellbeing support, and the Live Well Lifestyle Spending Account.
  • Retirement and pension plans, often with company contributions, plus life and disability insurance where relevant.
  • Up to $/€/£1,000 per year for self-directed learning, including courses, certifications, and books.
  • Equity through the Virtual Stock Option Plan where applicable.
