Responsibilities
- Lead Greyspace architecture and technical decisions, including service boundaries, data ownership, API contracts, and failure behavior.
- Design, build, deploy, and manage distributed services for simulated internet environments.
- Develop realistic DNS, certificate, routing, web, mail, and other network and application behaviors.
- Design reusable services with isolated per-range configuration, credentials, mutable state, and faults.
- Define integration contracts and partner on operator workflows, readiness checks, troubleshooting, and lifecycle management.
- Translate training needs into prioritized use cases, acceptance criteria, estimates, dependencies, and incremental delivery plans.
- Drive automated integration testing, observability, performance testing, recovery procedures, and deployment and upgrade validation.
- Lead design and code reviews, resolve cross-service risks, establish engineering standards, and mentor senior engineers.
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience and current Staff or Senior Software Engineer experience building distributed applications, platform services, or networked systems and leading technically complex cross-team work.
- Proven ability to design, build, and ship production-grade distributed services across the full software development lifecycle.
- Strong networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP, and TLS, with hands-on troubleshooting across application, service, and network boundaries.
- Experience designing multi-tenant or distributed systems with clear isolation, state-management, API, and failure-recovery boundaries.
- Demonstrated ability to drive technical standards and architectural decisions across multiple teams and make pragmatic delivery trade-offs.
- Strong scoping, estimation, communication, and ambiguity-management skills.
- Proficiency in a modern backend programming language and software engineering practices including API design, service decomposition, automated testing, and code review.
- Hands-on experience with Linux, containers, and Kubernetes, including service deployment and troubleshooting.
- Experience with self-hosted, on-premises, or disconnected environments is a strong plus.
- Familiarity with cyber ranges, simulation, internet service infrastructure, or security-sensitive and compliance-driven environments such as DoD, FedRAMP, or SOC 2 is a plus.
