Base Salary
$170k - $190k/yr
Responsibilities
- Lead design and architecture for complex Datastore systems and make trade-offs based on engineering principles and data.
- Design and operate PostgreSQL data models, schemas, indexes, query plans, migrations, access controls, and production database infrastructure.
- Build and maintain Kafka-driven event pipelines, including producers, consumers, replay, idempotency, and handling lagging consumers.
- Develop and evolve the GraphQL API, backend services, third-party integrations, and pipelines that deliver dataset snapshots to the warehouse.
- Debug and profile ambiguous cross-system problems while improving code structure, test coverage, tooling, documentation, and dashboards.
- Draft RFCs, lead technical design and discovery, and collaborate with product, scientific, clinical, platform, application, and support teams.
- Mentor engineers, provide actionable feedback, contribute to team planning, and improve engineering practices.
Requirements
- 7+ years of backend development experience, including at least 3 years focused on data platforms and backend infrastructure for data-centric applications.
- Deep proficiency in at least one of data modeling, distributed systems, API design, or database engineering.
- Strong production SQL and PostgreSQL experience, including schema design, indexes, query tuning, query plans, and database operations.
- Hands-on data streaming and event-processing experience with Kafka or an equivalent such as RabbitMQ, Pulsar, or Amazon Kinesis.
- Proficiency in Julia or Python; Julia experience is preferred but not required.
- Experience deploying and operating services in containerized environments, with familiarity with Kubernetes and Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform or Helm.
- Experience mentoring engineers and improving team practices, tooling, test coverage, or documentation.
- For the Datastore Systems focus, experience with GraphQL and TypeScript/JavaScript, including Node.js, and end-to-end event-driven pipeline design.
- For the PostgreSQL & Data Modeling focus, deep knowledge of query planning, EXPLAIN ANALYZE, schema design, zero-downtime migrations, replication, backup and restore, connection pooling, vacuum behavior, and extensions.
- Strong collaboration, communication, self-direction, and ability to work effectively in asynchronous, remote-friendly teams.
- Experience with or interest in production use of LLM-assisted or agentic coding tools and appropriate guardrails.
