Responsibilities

  • Set and evolve engineering direction, standards, and practices across multiple teams.
  • Design complex systems and services, including APIs, data models, integrations, performance, and scalability.
  • Write production-quality code, build prototypes, and take on high-risk technical work.
  • Build engineering reference architectures, service templates, shared libraries, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure-as-code modules.
  • Raise engineering quality through code reviews, design reviews, automated testing, static analysis, and delivery standards.
  • Improve reliability and operability through observability, resilience practices, service level objectives, incident reviews, and production escalation support.
  • Embed secure-by-design and DevSecOps practices in partnership with Information Security.
  • Lead technical-debt reduction, modernization, refactoring, and incremental migration efforts.
  • Improve developer experience and delivery flow using performance measures, evidence-led experiments, and responsible AI-assisted engineering tools.
  • Assess vendor, SaaS, and Group platforms for technical fit, APIs, extensibility, integration quality, security posture, and exit options.
  • Mentor engineers, develop technical leaders, contribute to hiring standards, and advise technical and business stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Typically 12+ years of software engineering experience, including significant experience setting technical direction across multiple teams as a principal, staff, or senior technical lead.
  • Deep expertise in at least one modern programming language such as C#/.NET, Java, TypeScript, or Python, with strong production coding and code-review experience.
  • Strong distributed-systems design skills covering APIs, event-driven integrations, data models, performance, and resilience.
  • Hands-on cloud-native engineering experience with Azure and/or AWS, including containers, serverless, and infrastructure as code.
  • Experience with CI/CD, automated testing, modern delivery practices, observability, and incident management.
  • Grounding in secure software engineering and the ability to balance delivery speed, quality, risk, and cost.
  • Ability to mentor and influence teams and vendors without direct authority.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience in financial services or regulated environments, wealth platforms, AI-assisted engineering, or global technology operating models is highly regarded.
  • Cloud or security certifications are advantageous.
