Responsibilities

  • Design and develop computer vision algorithms for space object detection, tracking, and 6DoF pose estimation.
  • Define computer vision subsystem architectures, requirements, and performance budgets aligned with mission objectives.
  • Support procurement of LiDAR systems, cameras, and other computer vision hardware in collaboration with vendors and supplier-chain engineers.
  • Plan and execute computer vision verification and validation, performance assessment, requirements verification, hardware-in-the-loop campaigns, and integrated system testing.
  • Support integration and testing of flight software implementations of computer vision algorithms.
  • Collaborate with Systems, GNC, Flight Dynamics, and other engineering disciplines on mission and system development.
  • Review other engineers’ work and guide more junior engineers.
  • Conduct research into computer vision algorithm designs relevant to Astroscale missions.
  • Contribute to system-level FMECA and FDIR processes.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or another relevant engineering or science discipline.
  • At least five years of industrial or research experience in computer vision algorithm development and deployment.
  • Strong understanding of computer vision, image processing, machine learning, and deep learning techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience developing computer vision algorithms from concept through validation and deployment.
  • Strong programming skills in Python, MATLAB, C, or C++ for computer vision applications.
  • Familiarity with OpenCV, TensorFlow, and PyTorch.
  • Understanding of LiDAR and camera sensor principles, software testing, and software integration.
  • Knowledge of software configuration management and version control tools, including Git and Git-flow workflows.
  • Basic knowledge of space system design and strong collaboration, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Desirable experience includes vision-based navigation in space, experimental testbeds for algorithm-training data, rigid-body dynamics and kinematics, spacecraft systems, the space industry, embedded or safety-critical software, Jenkins-based automated testing, ROS or ROS2, LiDAR signal processing, sensor fusion, and multi-sensor perception systems.
