Responsibilities
- Build scalable, secure, and high-performing backend and frontend systems for Avalara’s global compliance platform.
- Use AI-assisted coding, testing, documentation, and architectural exploration to improve development efficiency.
- Contribute to AI-enabled product features supporting automation, data processing, and customer-facing intelligence.
- Improve deployment frequency, code quality, automated test coverage, observability, and production reliability.
- Lead technical design discussions and influence architecture for complex distributed systems.
- Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and ownership while collaborating with global engineering, product, and business stakeholders.
Requirements
- Strong hands-on Java experience building scalable APIs and services.
- Strong React and TypeScript experience building maintainable frontend applications.
- Experience designing and operating distributed systems and RESTful and/or GraphQL APIs.
- Experience with AWS, Terraform, CI/CD pipelines such as GitLab, Docker, Kubernetes, and relational and/or NoSQL databases.
- Strong knowledge of automated testing strategies and demonstrated hands-on AI usage that produced measurable outcomes.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Engineering and 3+ years of professional software engineering experience aligned to senior-level scope.
- Strong written and spoken English communication skills.
- Preferred experience includes SaaS, enterprise-scale platforms, compliance, financial systems, or regulated domains.
