Responsibilities
- Monitor the health, performance, availability, alerts, logs, capacity, and resource utilization of PostgreSQL, MySQL, and Oracle databases across production, QA, and development environments.
- Respond to operational database issues, investigate root causes, participate in the rotating on-call schedule, and escalate complex architectural decisions to the Lead Database Administrator.
- Perform database maintenance, patching, version updates, schema and tablespace management, index maintenance, environment cloning, and QA/development refreshes.
- Execute and validate backup jobs, perform restores and recovery testing, monitor AWS RDS backups and snapshots, and support disaster recovery and failover validation.
- Diagnose query and performance issues using execution plans, EXPLAIN/EXPLAIN ANALYZE, Oracle performance tools, wait-event analysis, and index tuning.
- Write and maintain UNIX/Linux shell scripts, SQL, PL/SQL, PG/SQL, stored procedures, queries, and scheduled automation for operational support.
- Manage database users, roles, privileges, auditing, and RBAC controls in accordance with security policies.
- Support application development, QA, deployments, hotfixes, data loads, migrations, imports, exports, test data, and database validation activities.
- Maintain Terraform scripts and centralized runbooks, and document automation, backup, recovery, and operational procedures.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline and 4 years of hands-on database administration experience, or a master’s degree with 2 years, a Ph.D. with 1 year, or 12 years of related experience.
- Primary expertise in PostgreSQL on Linux/AWS RDS, MySQL on Linux/AWS RDS, or Oracle 19c on Linux, with multi-platform experience preferred.
- Working knowledge of backup and recovery strategies, database performance diagnostics, query-plan analysis, wait-event analysis, and index tuning.
- Hands-on experience writing SQL and scripting for operational and support tasks, including practical UNIX/Linux administration and bash or ksh shell scripting.
- Cloud database administration experience with AWS, Azure, Oracle Cloud, or Google Cloud Platform.
- Understanding of database security fundamentals, including privilege management, RBAC, and auditing.
- Preferred qualifications include experience with PostgreSQL, MySQL, and Oracle in production; Oracle Data Guard; PostgreSQL Streaming Replication; MySQL Group Replication; AWS RDS; Aurora; Terraform; Microsoft SQL Server; load testing; performance benchmarking; AWS Kinesis; Apache Kafka; Informatica; and relevant database certifications.
- Must clear a pre-employment drug test; the company does not currently administer a marijuana drug test for this position.
