Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain software integration layers connecting Compass safety modules to diverse robot platforms.
  • Build abstractions, APIs, and hardware interfaces that decouple safety logic from platform-specific hardware.
  • Collaborate with motion planning, perception, controls, and autonomy teams to support real-time data flow and performance.
  • Develop and maintain interfaces to safety-rated firmware and hardware while supporting functional safety requirements.
  • Architect scalable, production-grade software for deployment across millions of robots.
  • Write tested, maintainable C++ and/or Python for real-time robotics applications.
  • Define integration testing strategies and simulation-based validation pipelines for safety behavior.
  • Participate in design reviews, technical documentation, and cross-team interface alignment.
  • Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks in real-time safety-critical software paths.
  • Mentor junior engineers and improve software engineering practices.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of non-internship professional software development experience.
  • At least 5 years of programming experience with one or more software programming languages.
  • At least 5 years of leading design or architecture for new and existing systems, including reliability and scaling.
  • Experience mentoring, serving as a tech lead, or leading an engineering team.
  • Proficiency in C++, Rust, and/or Python with production-quality real-time systems experience.
  • Experience developing software for robotic systems, embedded platforms, or safety-critical applications.
  • Familiarity with robotics middleware such as ROS or ROS2 and real-time communication frameworks.
  • Experience designing software abstractions, APIs, or hardware abstraction layers for multi-platform deployment.
  • Understanding of version control, CI/CD, code review, testing, and software engineering practices.
  • Preferred: 5+ years of full software development lifecycle experience, including coding standards, source control, builds, testing, and operations.
  • Preferred: Master’s or PhD in Robotics, Computer Science, Controls, or a related field.
  • Preferred: experience integrating motion planners, perception pipelines, or control systems on physical robots.
  • Preferred: familiarity with control barrier functions, safety-critical control, formal safety verification, RTOS, safety-rated firmware interfaces, IEC 61508, or ISO 13849.
  • Preferred: experience with multiple robot morphologies, robotics simulation environments, reinforcement learning, or foundation model deployment on robotic systems.
  • Preferred: experience scaling software from prototypes to fleet-level production and working in cross-functional, research-adjacent teams.
