Base Salary
$196k - $294k/yr
Responsibilities
- Architect and scale production retrieval systems optimizing relevance, recall, latency, resilience, coverage, and diversity.
- Own retrieval models end to end from data extraction, feature pipelines, training, and evaluation through production serving.
- Design and analyze offline and online A/B experiments to measure model quality, latency, and buyer impact.
- Build large-scale indexing and serving systems for lexical and semantic retrieval across Etsy’s catalog.
- Translate research and prototypes into reliable production-grade systems and resolve complex retrieval behavior issues.
- Lead cross-functional initiatives, shape search roadmaps, and partner with product and engineering leadership.
- Provide technical leadership in retrieval, mentor engineers and scientists, and influence the broader direction of Etsy search systems.
Requirements
- Hands-on experience building retrieval or search systems end to end, including lexical matching, semantic or embedding-based retrieval, indexing, and low-latency serving.
- Proven experience delivering machine learning and NLP solutions across data extraction, feature engineering, model development, evaluation, and production integration.
- Experience designing scalable and extensible ML systems that support localization and regional variation.
- Demonstrated technical leadership on complex ML systems, including setting technical direction and driving cross-team initiatives.
- Strong software engineering foundations and proficiency in Python, Java, Scala, or equivalent languages.
- Hands-on experience with modern ML frameworks and infrastructure such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, and TFX.
- Ability to write clean, maintainable, production-ready, well-tested code and communicate effectively across disciplines.
