Base Salary
$163k - $204k/yr
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and test the Gusto PEO Benefits experience, including benefits shopping and plan-recommendation flows.
- Build carrier integrations, MCP tools, and agents that automate operational and customer support processes.
- Make foundational architectural decisions for a greenfield PEO Benefits offering.
- Write frontend code and design and build reliable backend APIs across the full product lifecycle.
- Own features after launch through long-term iteration and improvement.
- Mentor engineers on complex technical problems in large-scale, complex domains.
- Collaborate with Product Management, Data, Design, and Platform Engineering to understand customer problems, prototype solutions, iterate, and launch products.
- Help scale Gusto’s Ruby/Rails and JavaScript/React applications.
Requirements
- Typically 8+ years of software development experience.
- Preferred: 3+ years of PEO experience, including direct experience building PEO flows in a high-growth environment.
- Experience owning multi-quarter projects that solve complex engineering problems and create measurable customer impact at scale.
- Experience driving large, cross-functional projects end-to-end through ambiguity, including scoping, sequencing, unblocking, stakeholder alignment, and cross-team collaboration.
- Experience leveraging AI tools or systems to accelerate development, improve testing, and deliver product capabilities.
- Curiosity and experimentation with emerging AI frameworks, including applying and sharing best practices to evaluate and scale AI use safely.
- Ability to mentor engineers and maximize their performance and impact.
- Experience with or interest in Ruby on Rails.
- Ability to build well-structured, maintainable, well-documented code.
- Ability to communicate effectively across engineering teams and with business stakeholders.
- Appreciation for a collaborative, test-driven environment.
