
Senior Backend Engineer — Data Platform & AI Agents

Responsibilities
- Build agents that acquire legal documents from hundreds of heterogeneous sources using orchestration, tool calling, memory, and completeness guarantees.
- Own the transactional document catalog, data model, and API serving as the platform’s stable source of truth.
- Build processing workflows for PDF and HTML extraction, OCR, metadata enrichment, versioning, and regeneration.
- Design quality systems using test sets, thresholds, confidence scores, and regression tracking without relying on manual approval gates.
- Deploy, instrument, monitor, and operate services with metrics, logs, traces, retry handling, and graceful degradation.
- Collaborate with Search, AI, Product, and Legal Content teams; write RFCs, mentor peers, and help shape the roadmap and team.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience shipping and operating production backend or data services.
- Strong Python experience, including asynchronous I/O, API design, testing, and production service ownership.
- Hands-on production experience building agent orchestration with tool or function calling, memory and state management, error recovery, bounded context, and deterministic contracts.
- Deep Postgres experience, including schema design, JSONB versus typed columns, indexing, full-text search, migrations under load, and transactional correctness.
- Experience with queues or streams, idempotency, at-least-once semantics, atomic writes, immutable object storage, retry design, reproducibility, and graceful degradation.
- Experience with document and data processing, including PDF and HTML text extraction, OCR, and structured metadata extraction with LLMs.
- Experience with containers, CI/CD, Kubernetes or an equivalent platform, and operating services through incidents and on-call responsibilities.
- Fluent written and spoken English.
- Preferred experience includes LangGraph, LangChain, LlamaIndex, web crawling or scraping at scale, multilingual corpora, legal technology, Elasticsearch or OpenSearch, multilingual retrieval, TypeScript or JavaScript, MCP, open-source contributions, or a portfolio of systems to discuss.
