
Staff Software Engineer - Grading Operations

Responsibilities
- Own complex, loosely defined software projects from initial design through production, including cross-team initiatives.
- Build backend services, RESTful APIs, data models, integrations, and internal applications for grading and authentication operations.
- Design and implement event-driven, asynchronous, distributed, and high-volume systems.
- Work across containerized .NET applications, serverless APIs, Python processing jobs, and other architectures.
- Contribute to frontend features using JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML, CSS, and Vue.js.
- Mentor engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and problem-solving practices.
- Collaborate with Product, Technology, and Operations teams to turn business requirements into technical designs.
- Troubleshoot data, integration, service, and user-interface issues across a long-lived codebase.
- Participate in an on-call rotation for team-owned services.
- Write design documents and technical decision records.
Requirements
- 8+ years of software engineering experience building production applications, including deep backend experience and some frontend delivery experience.
- 5+ years of experience and strong proficiency with C# and .NET.
- Routine use of AI tooling with the judgment to review and take responsibility for its output.
- Experience delivering projects with initially unclear requirements and non-obvious designs.
- History of mentoring engineers and improving team design and development practices.
- Experience designing and building RESTful APIs and service integrations.
- Strong judgment regarding module boundaries, service boundaries, and architectural tradeoffs.
- Experience writing and maintaining automated tests for production services.
- Strong relational database and data-modeling fundamentals, including SQL Server or PostgreSQL.
- Hands-on experience building and operating cloud production services, including containers, orchestration, serverless compute, API gateways, messaging, and managed data stores.
- Comfort working in a modern frontend codebase with JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and a component-based framework.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code, monitoring, and observability tools.
- Ability to write clear design documents and turn complex Product and Operations requirements into extensible systems.
- Familiarity with Agile/Scrum methodologies.
- Preferred experience with AWS, Python, pytest or unittest, Apache Kafka, DynamoDB, or Vue.js.
- Preferred experience designing asynchronous, event-driven, distributed, and cross-region systems.
- Preferred experience partnering with Product and working directly with operations and business users.
- Preferred experience improving the speed of high-volume workflows.
