Principal Software Engineer
Toast, Inc.Responsibilities
- Lead the evolution of Toast’s backend architecture, frameworks, and data models with emphasis on delivery efficiency, scalability, and resilience.
- Design and build next-generation accounting and financial systems using Java, Kotlin, DynamoDB, Pulsar, GraphQL, and related big-data technologies.
- Define scalable engineering practices, delivery frameworks, and coding standards across the organization.
- Collaborate with Product, UX, QA, and multiple engineering teams to deliver customer-facing solutions.
- Develop technology roadmaps and architecture strategies aligned with customer and business objectives.
- Partner with technical leaders, implementation teams, and enterprise customers to guide integrations and deployments.
- Mentor and grow engineers across levels while promoting inclusive learning and engineering excellence.
- Champion data-driven prioritization and responsible adoption of AI-powered engineering tools.
Requirements
- 12+ years of experience designing and delivering complex, scalable backend systems.
- Proven technical leadership on mission-critical projects with influence across multiple teams.
- Strong experience with distributed, event-driven architectures and microservices using Java, Kotlin, Scala, or similar object-oriented languages.
- Deep understanding of data architecture and schema design; DynamoDB experience is a plus.
- Hands-on experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Strong knowledge of Postgres, SQL Server, and DynamoDB.
- Experience working in an Agile/Scrum environment.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
- Ability to balance delivery velocity with platform stability and long-term architecture goals.
- Experience using and incorporating AI-powered engineering tools into the software development lifecycle, including evaluating AI-generated solutions and championing responsible adoption.
