Responsibilities
- Lead the design, development, and long-term maintenance of backend systems supporting gameplay, live events, progression, rewards, social features, and platform capabilities.
- Own complex technical areas involving APIs, game logic, asynchronous processing, caching, persistence, and operational tooling.
- Deliver scalable server-side solutions within a large Python and Django codebase serving a live game.
- Improve reliability, performance, code health, observability, developer workflows, and production readiness.
- Architect and evolve asynchronous job systems, scheduled event workflows, and backend processes for live game operations.
- Partner with product, design, QA, analytics, and engineering leadership on technical solutions and execution plans.
- Mentor engineers through design discussions, code reviews, debugging support, and hands-on technical guidance.
- Identify and address technical debt, operational risks, scaling bottlenecks, incidents, and production-system weaknesses.
Requirements
- 5+ years of professional software development experience, ideally in gaming, live-service products, or large-scale backend systems.
- Deep expertise in Python and object-oriented programming, with experience designing scalable backend systems, internal platforms, and APIs.
- Experience with distributed systems, service-oriented architecture, backend integration patterns, Redis, DynamoDB, asynchronous job systems, scheduled workflows, and event-driven processes.
- Experience debugging production issues and improving system performance, scalability, resilience, code quality, testing practices, and maintainability.
- Familiarity with Docker and AWS-based cloud infrastructure and development workflows.
- Strong knowledge of algorithms, data structures, system design, and engineering tradeoffs in long-lived production systems.
- Experience building gameplay, progression, rewards, social, live-event, or other player-facing live-service functionality.
- Exposure to integrating Unity game clients with backend services and understanding of analytics, telemetry, operational tooling, and live-ops execution.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Demonstrated mentorship and technical leadership experience, strong communication skills, and the ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
