Responsibilities
- Architect and scale usage-metering and billing pipelines across ingestion, aggregation, rating, and invoicing for millions of events.
- Build payment flows with idempotent charges, retries, reconciliation, and resilience to provider edge cases and partial failures.
- Develop real-time fraud and abuse detection, scoring, and automated mitigation systems.
- Scale Postgres-backed systems, Node.js services, workers, queues, and Temporal workflows.
- Build TypeScript and GraphQL APIs with strong correctness and auditability.
- Write Engineering Requirement Documents and own projects from ideation through implementation, monitoring, and further scaling.
- Contribute to Railway open-source repositories, including its CLI, TypeScript SDK, and Railpack.
- Participate in on-call rotations from time to time.
Requirements
- Ability to autonomously lead, design, and implement backend systems where correctness, consistency, and auditability are essential.
- Track record of scaling a pipeline, service, or database to handle substantially higher load, including knowing when to use polling or alternative approaches.
- Deep expertise in Postgres and relational data modeling, including consistency guarantees and Postgres behavior at scale.
- Strong working knowledge of Node.js internals, including the event loop and memory behavior under load.
- Experience managing complex asynchronous and long-running backend jobs, ideally with a workflow engine such as Temporal.
- Familiarity with payment providers, idempotency, retries, reconciliation, and money-movement failure modes.
- Billing, payments, or fraud experience is a strong plus.
- Security- and abuse-aware approach to system design.
- Interest in participating across the full project development process, from research and planning through implementation and monitoring.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for mostly asynchronous collaboration.
- Rust experience or willingness to learn Rust is helpful.
