Responsibilities
- Define and drive the long-term technical vision for Xero’s Platform API and API ecosystem.
- Design and evolve external-facing APIs and SDKs, including versioning, deprecation, backward compatibility, and developer experience.
- Lead complex cross-team technical initiatives, technical strategy, design reviews, RFCs, and stakeholder alignment.
- Help deliver accounting-domain capabilities using the Supergraph model and build a developer platform connecting domain models to running APIs and production runtimes.
- Replace or improve legacy back-channel endpoints with strongly typed interfaces and stable contracts.
- Design event-driven systems for failure recovery, including webhooks, message queues, pub/sub patterns, and idempotent consumers.
- Consider the effects of API and event design on AI and agent safety, reliability, and model quality.
- Mentor engineers and build communities of practice around platform and API engineering.
Requirements
- Deep background in backend or platform engineering at scale, ideally in multi-tenant SaaS or distributed systems environments.
- Strong proficiency in a modern language such as C#, Go, or Java.
- Proven experience designing and evolving external-facing APIs and SDKs, including lifecycle management and backward compatibility.
- Familiarity with event-driven architecture and designing systems for failure and recovery.
- Track record of leading complex, cross-team technical initiatives and shaping technical strategy.
- Exposure to LLM- or ML-powered products, agentic architectures, or AI safety and governance concerns.
- Interest in developer experience and a demonstrated approach to mentoring and growing engineering capability in others.
