Responsibilities
- Design, build, and deploy user experiences and backend services across OfferUp’s five business verticals.
- Own features from planning and design through development, deployment, measurement, and iteration.
- Break complex engineering problems into achievable tasks and deliver them within committed timeframes.
- Collaborate with Product, Design, Data, and Business stakeholders on new features.
- Contribute to A/B tests and use experimentation results to guide releases.
- Participate in code reviews and promote strong patterns, testing, and edge-case handling.
- Coach and mentor junior team members, new hires, and interns.
- Create shared components, utilities, and services that improve team velocity.
- Maintain and improve runbooks, alerting, and monitoring, and participate in the team’s on-call rotation.
- Use AI coding tools to improve development velocity and code quality.
- Develop subject-matter expertise in one or more team sub-domains.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of professional software engineering experience.
- Demonstrated ability to deliver multiple features end-to-end, including planning, design, development, and deployment.
- Strong full-stack skills with React, TypeScript, HTML, CSS, and modern web tooling, plus Java and an understanding of microservices and distributed-systems fundamentals.
- Experience building and integrating with REST or GraphQL APIs.
- Knowledge of data structures and object-oriented design.
- Hands-on experience using AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or similar in a real engineering workflow.
- Ability to write appropriate tests, follow good coding patterns, consider trade-offs, and identify edge cases.
- Comfort giving and receiving feedback in code reviews and collaborating cross-functionally.
- BS or MS in Computer Science, or equivalent practical experience.
- Preferred: fluency in another modern object-oriented programming language; AWS Cloud infrastructure experience; experience with Bower, bundler systems, Node.js, Python, webpack, A/B testing platforms, analytics warehouses, LLM-based APIs, and cloud infrastructure or CI/CD pipelines.
