Base Salary
$140k - $170k/yr
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and execute OTA validation plans across device families and release types.
- Build and scale automated hardware-in-the-loop, virtualized-device, and emulator-based testbeds and harnesses.
- Automate OTA pipelines from artifact signing and staging through rollout and post-update verification using Python, shell, and CI tools.
- Validate bootloaders, update agents, package formats, rollbacks, A/B partitions, recovery modes, and secure update properties.
- Test update resilience under intermittent networks, latency, packet loss, power interruptions, low battery, storage constraints, and corrupted images.
- Define rollout-health metrics and KPIs, instrument devices and cloud backends, and produce release-readiness reports.
- Perform root cause analysis on failed updates, reproduce field issues, and drive remediation with firmware and backend teams.
- Maintain device lab hardware and tooling, including JTAG, serial consoles, network emulators, power controllers, logic analyzers, Wireshark, and serial monitors.
- Improve OTA processes through staging strategies, canary rollouts, rollback thresholds, risk assessments, and runbook documentation.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- At least 5 years of hands-on experience validating embedded devices and firmware updates, including OTA or similar systems.
- Strong Python and shell scripting ability, with familiarity with C/C++ for embedded debugging.
- Deep understanding of embedded Linux and/or RTOS platforms, bootloaders such as U-Boot, partition schemes, and A/B update models.
- Experience building automated test harnesses and integrating tests into CI pipelines such as Jenkins, GitLab CI, or CircleCI.
- Experience with serial/UART, JTAG/SWD, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, power-cycling rigs, and related hardware debugging workflows.
- Familiarity with HTTP(S), MQTT, CoAP, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, cellular, BLE, logs, packet captures, and device telemetry.
- Strong debugging, failure reproduction, analytical, documentation, and communication skills.
- Preferred experience with AWS IoT Device Management, Mender, Azure IoT, Google Cloud IoT, secure update practices, PKI, TPM or secure elements, secure boot, CAN/LIN, and automotive-grade validation.
- Preferred familiarity with Docker, QEMU, canary and staged rollouts, feature flags, Yocto/OpenEmbedded, Buildroot, Prometheus, Grafana, and ELK.
